Aguascalientes is the capital of the state with the same name, city that still preserves vestiges of its more than 400 years history, for which is considered as colonial treasure. It offers the visitor a harmonic combination of the ancient and the modern.
The name of Aguascalientes is due the abundance of thermal waters in the zone. On October 22nd, 1575, was founded Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de las Aguas Calientes, with the intention to Project and give shelter to those who went through the Silver Route, which comprised the road between Zacatecas and Mexico City.
Within its main attractions there is the Government Palace, which in its interior has four Chilean Osvaldo Barra murals; the Baroque-Salomonic style Basilica Cathedral and the colonial style House of Culture.
The city keeps and special colonial environment which can be enjoyed in Aguascalientes Museum, in downtown, where one can see works from renowned artists like Saturnino Herran, Jesus F. Contreras and Gabriel Fernandez Ledezma. There is also the Jose Guadalupe Posada Museum, in the traditional Triana neighborhood, where the vast work by world famous engraver especially for La Catrina. In the Encino Temple is venerated the Black Christ, with the unexplainable growing of its left arm. Inside the temple one can find walls decorated with monumental oil paintings, which represent the Stations of the Cross.
One can also visit the Expoplaza, the Monumental Bullring, which is considered the most beautiful in Latin America; the Mexican Heroes Park, the Aguascalientes Theater, The Descubre Science and Technology Interactive Museum, which count with the biggest screen in its kind in Mexico (Omnimax).
San Marcos National Fair is renowned as the most important in Mexico and it has place during the second half of April and the first week of May. In it one can enjoy rooster fights, bullfights, charreadas (horse shows), livestock, industrial and commercial expositions, as well as cultural events and many other activities. Visiting Aguascalientes City will be an unforgettable experience.
